What Is a Birth Chart For? What Can We Learn From Our Birth Chart?
“Why am I like this?”
“Why do I keep going around in circles with certain things? , Why do I seem to struggle with the same things over and over?”
“Is there something I’m naturally good at that I haven’t noticed yet, a talent maybe?”
But I think, above all, we can learn the answer to the question “What am I going through, and why am I going through it?” I turned to astrology at a time when I was truly struggling, when I couldn’t understand how or why these things were happening to me, and no one else could explain it to me either.
Don’t we all ask ourselves similar questions at some point in our lives? This is exactly where the birth chart can open a different window, letting us look at ourselves a little from the outside. It can offer the possibility of finding a way out by seeing events from the bigger picture.
A birth chart is like a photograph of the sky taken at the exact moment you were born. Through the Sun, the Moon, the planets and the relationships between them, it gives symbolic information about our character structure, our natural talents, our potential, and the areas where we may struggle more in life.
But I think the truly beautiful part is this: Sometimes it reveals sides of ourselves we’ve never noticed.
What does a birth chart give us?
We all have things we’re naturally good at. One of us is good at communicating, another can stay calm in a crisis, you might be creative, I might have a talent for organization, and someone else might be great at guiding people.
But a trait that feels completely natural to a person can seem, to them, like “something everyone can do.”
When we look at a birth chart, it becomes possible to notice the areas where a person is strong, as well as the potential they haven’t yet used.
Sometimes you discover that the thing you thought “everyone could do” is actually an important talent of yours.
And sometimes you may see that a trait you’ve called “that’s just who I am” for years is actually a behavior pattern you could change or use differently. And changing it might even change your life, and make it more beautiful.
Why do I keep experiencing the same things?
This is, I think, one of the most interesting aspects of the birth chart.
In life, we sometimes live different versions of the same story. We meet similar people, face similar problems in similar relationships, or sabotage ourselves on the same issue over and over.
We often find ourselves saying, “Why did I do this again?”or “Why do I keep getting stuck in the same patterns?”
Astrology can offer a different perspective for understanding how a person perceives events, which behavior patterns they’re more easily drawn to, and where they might struggle.
But the goal is not to say, “This is your fate.”
Quite the opposite.
Once you become aware of something, you gain the chance to change your relationship with it.
For example, in a chart, we might see that a person struggles to express their anger, or tends to bottle it up inside. Simply saying “you’re an angry person” doesn’t really help here.
The real question is this:
How can we use this energy better?
If someone’s natal chart shows a structure that would benefit from releasing physical energy through movement, they might be encouraged to exercise, take up an activity like kickboxing, or bring regular physical movement into their life.
So astrology doesn’t just point out a trait; it can also make us think about healthier ways to use it in our lives. It can even guide us.
Discovering talents we haven’t noticed in ourselves
A birth chart can help a person reflect on their potential in different areas such as communication, creativity, leadership, organization, research and teaching.
Maybe you’re very creative but have never used it.
Maybe communicating with people comes so easily to you that you never thought of it as a special talent.
Or maybe you have a natural potential in a completely different field from the work you’ve been doing for years.
Seeing this in the chart can sometimes open a new door for a person.
“So this side of me existed all along!”
This, I think, is exactly one of the most enjoyable parts of astrology.
What can it tell us about our body and health?
In astrology, there are symbolic indicators associated with different parts of the body and our life energy.
Through the birth chart, we can develop awareness about the areas a person may need to pay more attention to, or where they might be more sensitive.
There’s an important distinction to make here: astrology does not make medical diagnoses or identify illnesses.
However, it can provide a symbolic awareness that helps us listen to our bodies more closely, pay attention to certain life habits, and take a little better care of ourselves.
Does a birth chart tell the future?
Using the birth chart only to find the answer to “What will happen in the future?” feels a bit off, kind of limited to me. It might even be called a little absurd at times.
Of course, in astrology, we can examine the themes of upcoming periods and whether they’ll be more eventful, more supportive, or require more caution.
But a birth chart is not a fortune-telling tool.
I love astrology not for saying “This is who you are and this is how your life will be,” but for asking, “Look, these things exist within you too. How would you like to use them?”
Because as a person gets to know themselves better, their options multiply too.
And sometimes the most beautiful thing we see in a birth chart isn’t what will happen in the future; it’s something about ourselves that we hadn’t noticed until now.
So a birth chart analysis might be a good idea...
