What Is Relocation Astrology/ Astrocartography? How Does Where You Live Affect Your Life?

Most people encountering relocation astrology for the first time look at the map and say the same thing:

“What on earth are all these lines?” 😄

Yes, it looks a little confusing at first glance. But once you know what you’re looking at, it’s actually telling you something really interesting.

Because our birth chart can show not just who we are, but also which side of us might come out more strongly in which part of the world.

I see relocation astrology as one of the most powerful branches of astrology.

Why, you ask?

Because sometimes what we need to change in our lives isn’t just what we do, but where we do it.

The same person, a different life in a different city

When we go to different points on the globe, our natal chart doesn’t change. But the relationship between the planets in our chart and different points on the earth does change.

This is exactly what relocation astrology shows us.

Our birth chart has four main colomns:

the Ascendant (ASC), the Midheaven (MC), the Descendant (DSC), and the Imum Coeli (IC).

Through these four main colomns, the planetary lines stretching across the globe give clues about which life themes may become more active in different regions.

In one place, we might become more visible.

In another, our career and standing in society might come to the forefront more.

In yet another, relationships and the people who enter our lives might take center stage.

And in another still, we might find ourselves circling back to face ourselves.

So the same person can have a completely different life experience in two different cities.

Four main gates

The Ascendant (ASC) line describes how the world greets you.

How people see you, your first impression, your body, and the energy you give off can all come more into focus here.

The MC, or Midheaven, line is where you’re recognized, visible, and known.

Career, social standing, achievement, and what people know you for can gain more importance here.

The Descendant, or DSC, line is where you meet “the other.”

Relationships, partnerships, encounters, and the people who enter your life can gain more importance here.

The IC, or Imum Coeli, is a little different.

This is where a person meets themselves.

Home, family, roots, the past, inner life, and the sense of belonging can come up more here.

It’s as if the sky has four main gates, and relocation astrology shows us where in the world each of these gates opens.

So what do the planetary lines tell us?

Each planet amplifies a different theme.

On your Sun line, for example, you might feel more visible, and feel stronger and more central.

Venus lines can bring relationships, social life, aesthetics and enjoyable experiences to the forefront.

Jupiter lines can support themes of growth, opportunity, education, travel and expansion.

Saturn lines can be a bit more serious. They can bring responsibility, limits, hard work and struggle.

But Saturn isn’t always “bad.”

Sometimes Saturn is exactly what we need.

My tutor and friend Kenan Yasin Bölükbaşı once gave a beautiful example of this in one of his lessons.

One of his clients was a student who simply couldn’t manage to graduate from university. The young man had been struggling for years, but the degree just wouldn’t come. It turned out his school fell right on his Saturn line.

Then he transferred to a different university, and naturally, the location of his school changed.

And in his very first year at the new location, he graduated.

Now, can we just dismiss Saturn as a “bad planet”?

No.

Perhaps, for that young man, the Saturn line was simply saying, “you’ll struggle here.”

In another place, a different door may have opened for that same person.

Is the answer to “where should I go?” really that simple?

Actually, no.

Relocation astrology shouldn’t be thought of as a prescription.

“My Jupiter line passes through Bali, so I’m moving to Bali right away.”

If only life were that simple. 😄

A place looking good on the map doesn’t mean the same thing will happen there for everyone.

What matters is which theme is currently developing in your life, and which version of you is ready to emerge.

Because sometimes, when you go somewhere, your body decides before you do.

“There’s something here.”

you say.

Sometimes, in a certain city, you feel completely at ease, very alive, and very much “yourself.”

And sometimes, quite the opposite, you find yourself thinking, “Why did I become like this here?”

It’s possible to make sense of these feelings through the map.

When you go matters as much as where you go

Another interesting side of relocation astrology is timing.

Going somewhere, versus going there during a particular astrological period, may not create the same experience.

Transits, eclipses, returns, and other important celestial movements can activate certain themes at a location more strongly.

In other words, the map answers the question of where, while the sky answers the question of when.

That’s why sometimes you simply travel somewhere.

And sometimes that place sets something in motion in your life.

The two are not the same thing.

So what is relocation astrology actually for?

It can help you understand which themes in your life might be strengthened by the places you live in or are considering moving to.

Do you want to be more visible in your career?

Do you want to open a new chapter in your relationships?

Are you looking for more education, travel, or growth?

Do you need to turn inward a little and rebuild your life?

Or do you feel like you’ve been stuck in the same place for years, unable to move forward?

Maybe the issue isn’t you.

Maybe the place you’re in simply isn’t supporting the person you want to be right now.

Because every place in the world can activate a different side of you.

In one place, you might be braver.

In another, more visible.

In another, more relational.

And in another still, more introspective, alone with yourself.

That’s why, to me, relocation astrology isn’t just the answer to “where should I move?”

The more beautiful question is this:

“In which part of the world can I live out which version of myself the most?”

The map doesn’t tell you where you need to go.

It only shows you which doors open where.

Where you go is still your decision to make.
