What Is a Solar Return Chart? Is Your Birthday the Start of a New Astrological Year?

Your birthday has arrived.

There’s cake. There are candles. There are “happy birthdays.” And then there’s the whole age thing, let’s not even get into that. 😄

But astrologically, your birthday carries a far more interesting meaning than that.

Because the Sun returns every year to the exact degree it was in at the moment you were born.

This moment is called the Solar Return.

And the chart of this moment is used to understand the main themes of the roughly year-long period from your birthday to your next birthday.

The birth/natal chart and the Solar Return are not the same thing

Your birth chart never changes throughout your life.

Whatever the sky looked like at the moment you were born, that’s what your birth chart is. It describes your core character, your potential, and the main themes of your life.

The Solar Return, on the other hand, forms anew every year.

So if your birth chart is your main chart, the Solar Return can be thought of as a small yearly user’s guide that that year’s sky hands you.

A new astrological year begins with every birthday.

And you don’t experience the same things every year.

One year, your career might settle at the center of your life.

Another year, relationships.

Another year, home, family and moving.

And in yet another year, you might go through a transformation that’s entirely about you.

The Solar Return gives us an idea of which subjects that year might bring more to the forefront.

So do we draw up the same birthday chart every year?

No.

And here’s where things get really fun.

Location!

The Sun returns to your birth degree every year, but where you happen to be in the world at that moment can change the house placements in your Solar Return chart.

So if you spend your birthday in Istanbul, you’ll get one Solar Return chart, and if you spend it in London, you’ll get a different one.

Even just being in a different country can completely change certain areas of the chart.

“Does where I am on my birthday really matter that much?”

Astrologically speaking: Yes.

So if you’re booking a plane ticket for your birthday thinking, “Let me be somewhere else this year, let my life change!”, taking a look at the astrological chart at the same time isn’t a bad idea at all. 😄 Astrologers use this location piece differently from one another. I personally like to take it into account, and I always try to apply it in my own life, and in the lives of the people I love and my mother’s life as well.

So what does the Solar Return chart actually tell us?

In its simplest form:

“What is the main theme of the year ahead?”

This is what we try to understand.

For example, if the career area is very strong in the Solar Return chart, that year your work life, professional goals, visibility, or standing in society might come up more.

If the relationships area stands out, you might experience partnerships, marriage, new relationships, or important developments in existing ones.

If the home and family area is emphasized, moving, changing homes, family matters, or reorganizing your own living space might come up.

If the money area is strong, financial matters may demand more attention.

But let’s add a small astrology note here again:

A house or planet being strong doesn’t mean “this will definitely happen.”

Astrology shows more which subjects might come under the magnifying glass that year.

The Solar Return can also show us what we might be able to change

I think this is one of the most beautiful parts of the Solar Return.

Because sometimes a year comes along, and life pushes us toward a particular subject.

And we say, “Why is this issue coming up again?”

Maybe that year, that’s exactly the subject we need to deal with.

For example, a career you’ve long neglected might suddenly come to the center of your life.

Or after living in the same home for years, the idea of moving might suddenly cross your mind.

Maybe you need to take a relationship seriously.

Or maybe, quite the opposite, you need to let some relationships go…

The Solar Return can be used to understand which area of life is asking for more of your attention that year.

Does going somewhere else on your birthday change your life?

A little caution is needed here.

Simply hopping on a plane and spending your birthday in another country doesn’t mean “Poof, new life!” 😄

But the fact that your location changes the houses in your Solar Return chart can change which areas of life get more emphasis that year.

That’s why some people specifically choose to travel on their birthdays. Take yours truly, for example.

In a sense, they’re trying to choose which doors will open more widely in the chart of the new astrological year.

But we come back to the same point again:

The chart doesn’t make the decision for you.

It only shows you the options and the potential themes.

What is the Solar Return really saying?

I think the nicest way to think about it is this:

Your natal chart is the big picture answer to the question, “Who am I?”

The Solar Return, meanwhile, comes around each year and asks:

“So which side of yourself will you focus on this year?”

One year, career.

One year, love.

One year, money.

One year, family.

One year, health and the body.

One year, education and learning.

And one year might simply be the year of “okay, now it’s time to look after yourself.”

Every birthday isn’t just about turning a year older.

Astrologically, it also opens the door to a new yearly cycle.

And perhaps this is partly why making a wish while blowing out the candles has been so beloved for thousands of years.
